| Wide open battle looms in 7th Shakey’s V-League // High-powered, action-packed volleyball action returns to the local sporting scene next month when the Shakey’s V-League unveils its seventh season in what promises to be a banner year for the sport that has generated so much interest and following the last few years. With three Visayan teams joining to make it a 10-team cast and a novel format adopted to make the race to the championship doubly exciting, a wide open battle for the crown looms when the first conference of the league’s seventh season is fired off on April 11 at The Arena in San Juan City. It will not only be a clash of the finest and brightest teams from the UAAP and NCAA leagues but also from the Visayas with University of San Jose-Recoletos and Southwestern University from Cebu and Univ. of St. La Salle-Bacolod raring to strut their wares against the fancied Big City teams. In fact, SWU, winner of last year’s CESAFI women’s volley tournament, will be treated as a Metro Manila team, taking the spot vacated by University of the Phils., which decided to take a leave of absence to further shore up its roster in time for the second conference in July. “What makes this conference exciting is that the Visayan teams will see action from the start unlike the previous years when they are seeded into the quarters, thus giving all the teams the chance to test their mettle,” said Moying Martelino, chairman of the organizing Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. (SVMGI). “This is going to be fun, exciting as we envisioned it to be.” University of Santo Tomas, which swept last year’s twin titles for a league-best five championships, will still be the team to beat in the upcoming conference sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and backed by Mikasa and Accel and telecast over NBN-4. But the rest have underwent tremendous buildup in the run-up to the tournament, ready to challenge the Tigresses for top honors. Ateneo, for one, is itching to get going after an impressive third place finish in the recent UAAP tilt along with Adamson, Far Eastern U, perennial NCAA champion San Sebastian and Lyceum and St. Benilde, two teams whichretained the core of their last year’s squad. The SVMGI and Shakey’s launched the event in 2004 to revive women’s volleyball which had its glory days in the early 90s and at the same time give the sport the much-needed boost and provide a venue for these players where they could hone their talent and skills. Under the format, the 10 teams will be divided into two groups and play a one-round robin elims with the top four squads from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. The Last 8 will again be grouped into two and play a single round with the top two teams in each group clashing in a pair of crossover semis. Winners will then clash for the crown in another best-of-three affair. Playdates are set on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 2 p.m. Games will be shown on a delayed basis the following playdate on NBN 4 although matches can be viewed live on webcast at www.v-league.ph. | |

| UST seeks longer reign in Shakey’s V-League2 AM • Wed 24 Mar 2010 // Out to extend its supremacy in the Shakey’s V-League, University of Santo Tomas has kept the core of its last year’s champion team, dropping just three players while re-enlisting a former MVP to underscore its all-out bid for win No. 6 in the country’s premier women’s volley league firing off next month at The Arena in San Juan. Mary Jean Balse, a former MVP who helped power UST to its first three titles before the team took a leave of absence in the first conference of the 2008 season, is back in the fold, raring to team up with reigning MVP Aiza Maizo and mainstays Rhea Dimaculangan, Ange Tabaquero, Maru Banaticla and Maika Ortiz as they shoot for a third straight title victory and sixth overall. Also keeping their spots in the team are Judy Caballero, Hanna Mance and Jane Gonzales, members of the squad that swept Adamson in the best-of-three finals last December to complete the Tigresses sweep of last year’s twin titles. “The team is doing okay although we couldn’t train with a complete lineup since most are busy with their final exams this week,” said UST coach Shaq delos Santos in Filipino. Although most of the teams competing in the seventh season of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza, will be fielding in practically intact rosters, UST remains the top pick this early, owing to its talented starters and a bench ready to step up at any given time. “I can’t tell which team is strong but for sure all teams have prepared hard for the tournament,” said delos Santos, who will be without Michelle del Rosario and Jen Fortuno and former reinforcement Roxanne Pimentel this conference. The Espana-based squad, boasting of past, present and future stars, is also expected to name its other guest player in the next few days as the organizing Sports Vision brings back its two-reinforcement per squad format this season to further level the playing field and make the league more interesting. Tipped to crowd UST for the title are Adamson, Far Eastern U, San Sebastian and Ateneo, which has tapped Thailand national team stalwart Son Keawbundit and former top scorer Charo Soriano as guest players in the Eagles’ most serious bid for a first-ever crown in the league backed by Accel and Mikasa. The Lady Falcons will be backstopped by former MVP Nerissa Bautista and Cha-cha Moralde, the Lady Stags have re-enlisted Thai ace Jeng Bualee and Suzanne Roces, while the Lady Tams will lean on the Carolino sisters – Mayeth and Michelle. Also in the list are St. Benilde, Lyceum and Visayan teams Univ. of St. La Salle-Bacolod, former three-time CESAFI winner Univ. of San Jose-Recoletos and reigning CESAFI champion Southwestern University. Under the format, the 10 teams will be divided into two groups and play a one-round robin elims with the top four squads from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. The Last 8 will again be grouped into two and play a single round with the top two teams in each group clashing in a pair of crossover semis. | Lady Eagles eye Final 4 in Shakey’s V-League8 AM • Tue 30 Mar 2010 // After a seventh and fifth place finishes last season, Ateneo targets no less than a semifinal stint in this year’s Shakey’s V-League. But with a solid roster and a come-backing Thai reinforcement, the Lady Eagles could well hope for a second crack at the crown. “Since Dzi Gervacio, Fille Cainglet, Gretchen Ho and Jem Ferrer came into the team, we haven’t reached the semis. But this time, we expect to enter the Final Four,” said Ateneo coach Clint Malazo in Filipino. To achieve their goal, Malazo stressed the need for his players to work hard and play as a team like what they did when they turned in a third place finish in the recent UAAP women’s volley tournament. “We hope to bring our success in the UAAP to this year’s V-League but the girls must double their effort to contend,” said Malazo. Ateneo actually finished runner-up to Adamson in the 2008 first conference for its best-ever finish but the Lady Eagles’ form took a dip in the succeeding tournaments, failing to match the strides of the other teams, particularly the UST Tigresses, who went on to sweep last year’s twin titles. But with former import Keawbundit Sontaya back in the Eagles’ fold and former top hitter Charo Soriano tapped as the other guest player, the Loyola-based spikers are hopeful they can slug it out even with the best in the field this year. Backing Gervacio, Cainglet, Ho and Ferrer, also named best setter in the UAAP, in the team are veterans Bea Pascual, Kara Acevedo and libero Stephanie Gabriel with support expected to come from Misha Quimpo, Mona Bagatsing and Tash Faustino. The Lady Eagles wound up a dismal seventh in last year’s first conference then lost to Far Eastern U in a playoff for the fourth semis slot in the second conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Sports Vision. Meantime, UST remains the team to beat in the upcoming tournament based on its formidable lineup although a host of others are raring to foil the Tigresses’ bid for a third straight crown in the event backed by Accel and Mikasa, including five-time NCAA champion San Sebastian, Adamson and Far Eastern U. Spicing up the tournament is the participation of three Visayan teams headed by reigning CESAFI champion Southwestern University, former three-time CESAFI winner University of San Jose-Recoletos and University of St. La Salle along with College of Saint Benilde and Lyceum. The 10 teams will be divided into two groups and play a one-round robin elims with the top four squads from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. | |
